PG Deptt of Economics organiseda 02-Day ICSSR sponsored International Conference on the theme ‘Roadmap to Sustainability: Environment and Health’ from Mar 05 - Mar 06, 2020. The Conference aimed at exploring innovative, practical and sustainable ways of protecting health and environment. Prof VK Malhotra, Member Secretary ICSSR, New Delhi was the Chief Guest of the Inaugural Session. He urged economists to revamp the measure of development by including the physical, intellectual and spiritual co-efficient of life. Prof Karamjeet Singh, Registrar, PU Chd was the Guest of Honour. He quoted from Sri Guru Granth Sahib highlighting that the ancient Indian scriptures are a source of wisdom and a guide to an ecologically balanced life. Prof Saamdu Chetri, Director GNH, Bhutan in his Key-note address dwelled on the Gross National Happiness as practiced in Bhutan vs the Gross Domestic product used as a measure of growth and success by economists around the world. He emphasised on the need of assuming responsibility of environment protection at individual level rather than expecting the governments to do everything. Dr Ram Prasad Gyanwali, Professor, Central Deptt of Economics, Tribhuvan University, Kirtipur, Kathmandu, Nepal touched upon the disproportionate development leading to the green house effect. He suggested remedial measures like afforestation, green cultivation and concentration on MSMEs. Dr DK Madaan, Professor, School of Social Studies, Punjabi University, Patiala as Special Guest at the Inaugural session used the model of the UN’s Sustainable Development Goal as a roadmap to measure sustainable development. He made certain observations that amongst states in India, Kerala, HP and Punjab were first, second and twelfth on the given index of SDG. Amongst UT, Chandigarh is at no one. Internationally, India ranked 115. Dr Kanwaljit Kaur Marwaha highlighted the various aspects of environment and deteriorating health scenario in her concept note. Mr Charanjit Singh (HOD Economics) delivered the Vote of Thanks. Panel Discussion on ‘Health for All’, held on Mar 05, 2020, was facilitated by Prof Saamdu Chetri, Prof Lakhwinder Singh Gill, Professor, Deptt of Economics, Punjabi University Patiala, Dr Meena Sehgal, Professor, Deptt of Psychology, PU Chd, Dr Rajesh Aggarwal, Associate Professor, CRIID Chandigarh and Dr Ravinder Khaiwal from PGIMER, Chandigarh. The discussion focused on emerging challenges of health sector in India in the wake of constantly deteriorating environmental dynamics. Prominent issue that emerged was a holistic approach on physical health supplemented by mental health and accompanied by natural health of the air, water and underwater life forms for a sustainable growth and development. Dr Bandana Goindi coordinated the session. Panel discussion on ‘Sustainable Environment’ held on Mar 06, 2020 facilitated by Dr Sucha Singh Gill, Researcher and Professor, CRIID Chd, Dr SK Chadha, Professor, UBS, PU Chd, Dr P Arunachalam, Professor and Head, Deptt of Applied Economics, Cochin University of Science and Technology, Kochi, Kerala and Ms Reena Chadha, AGM Eco Laboratories and Consultants, Pvt Ltd, Mohali stressed upon increasing interdependence between economic and ecological efficiency. They put forward their views on the burning issue of environment degradation and farmers’ plight including factors like chemical farming, paddy growing, monopolised selling of seeds. Dr Gaganpreet Kaur conducted the session. There were11 technical sessions (oral presentations) and one on poster presentation held during 02 days of the conference in which 300 delegates from all over India presented their papers. The papers were from Bhutan, Oman, Thailand and 15 States across India out of which 87 papers were on Environment Sustainability, 26 on Action plans on Environment, 07 on Plastic free Communities, 14 on Energy, 62 on Health, 54 on Agriculture Sustainability, 19 on Technology and Environment. Besides this, there were 20 poster presentations on Health and Environment. From each session, one best paper award was also given and two prizes were given for poster presentation. S Balbir Singh Sidhu, Health and Family Welfare Minister, Punjab was the Chief Guest of the valedictory function. Mr Debendra Dalai, Director, Deptt of Science & Technology, Chd delivered the valedictory address. Prof Saamdu Chetri recited a poem apt to the theme and got a huge applause from the audience. Dr Shad Ahmad Khan, College of Business, University of Buraimi, Al Buraimi, Oman was the Special Guest. He spoke on the new concept of Vertical farming. Keeping the theme of the conference in mind, plastic was not used in any form during the conference. Green plants were used to welcome the guests. Jute kits were given to all delegates. Water was served in paper glasses. During Valedictory, Dharat Suhavi Environment Society of the College distributed herbal saplings like Parsley, Lemon Grass, Basil, Mint, Celery and Rosemary amongst the participants and the resource persons to promote the use of medicinal plants in daily life. In addition to the grant of Rs 2 lakh by ICSSR, the Conference was sponsored by NABARD, DST, SBI, Corporation Bank and Sikh Educational Society. A National Seminar on ‘Entrepreneurship Development in India: Challenges and Opportunities’ was organized by the department. Prof R S Bawa, VC Chandigarh University was the Chief Guest at the Inaugural Session. The Keynote Speaker was Dr G S Batra, Prof and Head, Department of Management Studies, Punjabi University, Patiala. Dr Indu Bala, (Chairperson, Department of Economics, PU, Chandigarh) and Dr Narinder Kaur, (Principal, University Constituent College, Mirapur) were the Guests of Honour. The seminar was chaired by Prof S K Chadha, (UBS, Chandigarh). At the Valedictory Session, Professor Sucha Singh Gill (Director, CRRID, Chandigarh) was the Chief Guest and Prof R S Ghuman (CRRID, Chandigarh) was the Guest of Honour.
Around 90 teachers, scholars and students presented their papers on the themes of the seminar. On this occasion, a book edited by Dr Kanwaljit Kaur was also released.
