ABOUT THE DEPARTMENT
Chemistry is the link that connects problems in the fundamental nature of matter to the most complex problems in the processes of life. Department of Chemistry, SGGS College, Chandigarh is one of the globally recognized, emerging and leading departments in Basic Sciences & Humanities. The Department started with the inception of college in 1966.Since its inception; the department has been imparting the highest level & quality of academic education to undergraduate and postgraduate students. Department constitutes a 15 member faculty expertise in all the major areas of chemistry.
The department has 5 well-furnished laboratories equipped with state-of-art instruments such as UV-Vis Spectrophotometer, conductivity meter, muffle furnace, fuming cupboard, Polari meter etc. required to carry out modern day chemistry. The main objective of the department is to provide a strong foundation in fundamentals of chemistry through course offered by the University & a comprehensive practical exposure to the various instrumental techniques to the students required for their undergraduate and post graduate programmes.
Postgraduates majoring in chemistry can go on to several professional fields, including medicine, pharmaceutical, food and technology, environmental studies, academics and research. Our commitment to teaching is also reflected in our desire to build a community environment and provide every opportunity of success for our postgraduates with high professional competence & with an awareness of importance of chemistry in the global scenario.

Admission to MSc I (Chemistry) will be based on entrance test PU-CET (PG) conducted by PU Chandigarh. Only the rank holders in the entrance test will be considered. 50% weightage will be given to the score in entrance test and 50% to the score in the qualifying examination. Once the list is exhausted, admissions will be on merit basis under University instructions.
A student who has passed with minimum of 40% marks in Science group (PCM) in +2 examination of a recognized Board.
A student who has passed with minimum of 40% marks in Science group (PCB) in +2 examination of a recognized Board.
