ABOUT THE DEPARTMENT
The PG Department of Commerce is one of the oldest departments of the College offering under graduate, postgraduate and add-on courses. The Under-Graduate Course of Commerce (BCom) was started on July 19, 1970 with 60 Students, 5 Faculty Members and Prof R C Kaushal as Head of the Department. After superannuation of Prof Kaushal, Prof SPS Yadav and Prof RS Chhiller served as Heads of the Department.
With the growing demand of Commerce stream, the Post-Graduate Course of Commerce (MCom) was started in the year 2004. Further BBA Course was introduced in the session 2021-22 to cater to interest of students in Management courses. Presently the department, is headed by Dr Tejinder Singh Brar. It has more than 1000 students on its rolls who are mentored by highly qualified 24 Faculty Members (21 grant-in aid and 3 contractual). Twenty of the Faculty Members are PhD degree holders with specialization in different fields of Commerce/Management. Besides holding degrees in the stream of Commerce, some Faculty Members also have specialized in other fields as, Law, Economics and Management. The Department offers Honours in Accounting & Finance and Economics to students in their 2nd and 3rd year of graduation. Besides that, the department also offers Add-On courses in e-Commerce and e-Banking. The department has recently started Certified Course in Tally in collaboration with Tally Education Pvt. Ltd. This course has been started with the motive of making students employable in the areas of Accounts, Audit and Taxation etc.
The Department organises academic and real life learning experience activities through various extension lectures, seminars, conferences and educational trips. Commerce Society of Department of Commerce started in the year 1970-71 was revamped and got its new name ‘Expressions Club’ in the year 2014. The Cub under the mentorship of Dr Rimpi organises inter-college events, like, Business Proposal Competiion, Quiz, Poster making and Slogan Writing Competitions etc every year. Considering the scope of activities to be covered under the Club, the Expressions Club has been renamed Business Quest Club in the session 2022-23.
The Department is proud of its illustrious Alumni, who are well placed across different fields. Mr Rammi Kaushal of BCom was the first University Gold Medalist from the Department who presently is the Managing Director of a leading US Company in real estate business. Sh Suresh Arora, ex- DGP (Punjab) and Sh Virender Garg, an IRS are our valuable Alumni. Many other renowned entrepreneurs, leading educationists and senior Commerce faculty members of the region and other city Colleges are the product of our Department.

INFRASTRUCTURE
Library: There is one main library in the College and it houses total 2000 books of Commerce Courses. Also the library subscribes to 21 journals in Commerce and management including 9 online Journals and 01 Database (N-List).
Internet facility for staff and students: Two computers with internet facility and access to e-journals are available in the library. The College further has well equipped computer labs with internet, in the PG Department of Computer Science which can be used by faculty as well as students.
Class rooms with ICT facility: Classrooms with interactive boards / LCD projectors are available for Power point presentations and other enhanced teaching-learning experience.
