PG Department of Biotechnology and Microbial Biotechnology
ABOUT THE DEPARTMENT
The Department of Biotechnology and Microbial Biotechnology was established in 2006 in self finance mode with the objective to provide outstanding Biotechnology education directed at enriching the quality of life in an emerging knowledge-based society. The faculty of the department is actively involved in research and has been awarded several research projects by DST (UT administration) and UGC. The faculty publishes research papers in national and international journals on regular basis. The Department offers undergraduate program in Biotechnology Honors and Biotechnology Elective and postgraduate programs in M. Sc. Biotechnology and M.Sc. Microbial Biotechnology. The department has well-furnished four experimental and two research laboratories for various undergraduate/postgraduate courses and also has facilities for carrying out fundamental research in the frontier areas of Biotechnology. In addition to this the department has a well-furnished fully air conditioned Instrument room.
The Department of Biotechnology is committed to the furtherance of the scientific temper and contributes to post-graduate level academic programs in Biotechnology with significant emphasis on laboratory work, emphasizing original, creative thinking and research. The department has developed extensive research facility and infrastructure to support the ongoing research and teaching initiatives. Most of the students of the department qualify UGC(NET)/CSIR entrance test and are admitted to Ph.D. programmes in prestigious research institutions in India. Some students of the Department also go abroad to pursue higher studies and some are working in reputed companies.

International Visiting Scholar at Garrison Institute on Aging, Texas Tech University Health Sciences Center, Lubbock, Texas USA (Aug, 2016-17). We investigated the molecular mechanisms linking type 2 diabetes with Alzheimer’s disease using a polygenic model of type 2 diabetes, TALLYHO/JngJ by studying the mitochondrial dysfunctions, fission/fusion genes regulation and Mitophagy in brain, pancreas, skeletal muscles and liver tissues. Many techniques were used to establish the molecular connections between T2D and AD such as RT-PCR, Western Blotting, Immunohistochemistry, ELISA, Flow cytometry, Transmission Electron Microscopy, and many biochemical and enzymatic studies. I also worked on diabetes cell lines and animal models, TALLYHO/JngJ, BL6 and SWR.J mice strains.
