Mathematics Department
ABOUT THE DEPARTMENT
Galileo Galilei once said, “If I were beginning my studies, I would follow the advice of Plato and start with mathematics”. With an aim to disseminate mathematical knowledge with ethical values, the mathematics department of our prestigious college was established in 1966 and was upgraded to execute the postgraduate degree program in 2006.
At the undergraduate level, mathematics is taught as an elective subject to B Sc (Non- Medical)-I,II,III, B Sc (Computer Science) – I,II,III, BCA- I,II,III and is opted by students of BA –I,II,III. Furthermore, diverse scientific disciplines include various courses in mathematics in their academic curriculum. For example, Optimization Techniques in M Sc – IT, Bioinformatics and Biostatistics in MSc – Microbial Technology and Mathematics in B Sc – Biotechnology (Honours). The postgraduate degree programme in mathematics is designed to impart mathematical training in atleast twenty rigorous courses.
Effective teaching-learning techniques are adopted by a well – qualified, disciplined and dedicated staff of twelve faculty members to prepare and make students competent enough to crack national level examinations like CSIR-JRF-UGC-NET, IIT-JAM, NBHM, GATE as is evident from the fact that recently 8 students qualified the CSIR-JRF-UGC-NET and GATE, 2 students made it to IIT for pursuing M.Sc. in Mathematics by achieving excellent ranks in IIT-JAM. The department encourages student participation in various national level mathematics training programs such as the MTTS run at different levels.
The department gratefully acknowledges the financial support through RUSA for the successful accomplishment of academic task, which include the UGC-NET preparatory classes, remedial classes and other funding institutions for extending monetary abutment in celebrating the National Mathematics Day.

The Department has been working extremely hard so that maximum students can benefit academically. The Mentoring and Counselling of the students is done from time to time. Special Remedial classes and UGC preparatory classes are also organised to help the students. The sincere efforts for over the past so many years have resulted in bringing excellent results in various competitive examinations conducted at national level such as CSIR-JRF-UGC-NET – Mathematics, IIT-JAM Mathematics, GATE. Apart from these the students excel in the end semester examinations conducted by Panjab University, Chandigarh. The details of few are as follows.
Mr. Manjeet Singh, a 2014-17, M.Sc. student qualified the Joint CSIR-UGC Test for Junior Research Fellowship (JRF) and National Eligibility Test (NET) with an All India rank 91 in the stream of Mathematical Sciences held on 18th December 2016. His roll no. was 404363. He is currently pursuing Ph.D. in Mathematics at PEC University (Deemed), Sector -12, Chandigarh.

Ms. Shabnam, a B.Sc.-Non-Medical final year student qualified Joint Admission Test for M.Sc. (JAM 2017) – Mathematics, conducted by the Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) with an All India rank 215. Her registration number was MA805F413. She was also selected to attend the Mathematics Training and Talent Search (MTTS) programme level-O, sponsored by the National Board for Higher Mathematics (NBHM), Department of Atomic Energy, India. She has recently completed her M.SC (MATHS) from IIT-GUWAHATI.

Ms. Shwet Nisha, an M.Sc. Ist year student qualified Joint Admission Test for M.Sc. (JAM 2017) – Mathematics, conducted by the Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) with an All India rank 321. Her registration number was MA805F377.
