History

Established in the year 1966, Sri Guru Gobind Singh College, a premier institute of Sikh Educational Society, is committed to academic excellence and a religio-cultural and social enhancement, the College was established as a tricentennial memorial to the Tenth Guru of the Sikhs, Guru Gobind Singh Ji, the great saint-soldier and a scholar par excellence.

Chief Minister of Punjab, Sardar Partap Singh Kairon laid the foundation stone of the College on August 29, 1963. With an affiliation to Panjab University Chandigarh, and under the able guidance of first Principal S Gurbax Singh Shergill, 18 teachers were appointed to teach Pre University classes for Arts and Sciences (pre medical and pre engineering) along with three Years degree course for BA and BSc classes to the first batch of 240 students. The student strength increased to 1040 in the following session with a jump of 800 students in the first year itself. Being the first co-educational institution of this region, the College attracted progressive and capable students having produced prominent alumni like S Bir Davinder Singh, Ex Deputy Speaker Punjab Vidhaan Sabha; S Rana Gurjit Singh, Cabinet Minister Punjab and Former Member Parliament; Dr Ajaib Singh, Former Member of Commision for Minorities PPSC; Sh Suresh Arora, DGP Punjab IPS; S HPS Mahal, Session Judge and many more in its initial batches.

The College is named after the immortal luminary and the tenth Sikh Guru, Sri Guru Gobind Singh Ji, whose teachings and lofty ideals shall always inspire us. [By the grace of the Guru one should read, contemplate and study spiritual knowledge to earn honour and respect] — is our prayer, [Excelsior] — is our perpetual mood and [Prosperity for all] — is our mission. The insignia of the College carries an imprint of the ‘Pen and Sword’, a combination of wisdom and valour, guarding the ‘flame of knowledge’ with the College motto [All mankind are one], inscribed atop. There has been a consistent endeavor in all these years to live up to the ideals and teachings of the Guru enshrined in the insignia of the college.

Sri Guru Gobind Singh College was the first co-educational institution to be set up in the region.

Though the College established itself as a tribute to the moral and religious consciousness of Guru Gobind Singh Ji, it has ever since suitably adapted to the changing educational set up of the milieu. The patronage of a visionary Management and commitment of a highly qualified and dedicated Faculty have driven the College to carve a niche for itself in the northern region.
