Overview

About the Department

An introduction to our history, our teaching philosophy, and the scholarly tradition we work within.

The Department of Botany was established in 1966. It currently offers an undergraduate B.Sc. (FYUP) degree under NEP 2020, in which Botany may be opted as one of the elective subjects.

The B.Sc. offered by the Department is an interdisciplinary degree in which Botany is paired with Chemistry, Computer Science, Zoology or Biotechnology, studied across three or four years. Two compulsory subjects — Punjabi / HCP and English — are taught during the first and second years of the undergraduate programme respectively, and Environmental Science is taught during the first semester.

Students opting to undergo the 3-year UG programme are awarded a UG Degree in the major discipline on successful completion of 3 years, securing a minimum of 144 credits — including the minimum credit requirements for ability-enhancement, skill-development, value-added courses and community-engagement / internship / field-based projects. The 4-year UG (Honours) Degree is awarded on successful completion of 4 years with a minimum of 192 credits, again including the minimum requirements for ability-enhancement, skill-development, value-added courses and field engagement.
