An introduction to our history, our teaching philosophy, and the scholarly tradition we work within.
The Postgraduate Department of History, established alongside the College and elevated to postgraduate level in a commitment to scholarly depth, stands as a pillar of historical inquiry serving approximately 3,000 students annually. Under the visionary leadership of Mr Bhupinder Singh, the Department is bolstered by a committed faculty of 9 Assistant Professors — including seven Ph.D. holders. Faculty expertise spans Medieval Indian History, Sikh Studies, Colonialism and Nationalism, Economic History, Gender and Society, and Punjab’s Cultural Heritage.
In line with NEP-2020, the Department embraces a multidisciplinary framework at the undergraduate level, delivering a robust curriculum featuring Discipline Specific Courses (DSC), Skill Enhancement Courses (SEC), Value Added Courses (VAC), Multidisciplinary Courses (MDC) and Interdisciplinary Courses (IDC). At the postgraduate level, offerings include Historiography and Research Methodology, Medieval and Modern Indian History, Sikh History and Punjab Studies, Colonial Encounters, and Economic and Social History.
The Department fosters a dynamic scholarly atmosphere through “Virasat — a Sikh Heritage Museum” that curates artefacts, exhibits and interactive displays on Punjab’s historical legacy. These initiatives spark historical curiosity and research acumen. Faculty adopt student-centred, experiential pedagogies, blending seminars, archival analysis, field research and debate formats to deepen critical historical thinking.
For student empowerment, Bridge Courses, orientation programmes, UGC-NET coaching, remedial sessions and mentor-mentee systems provide targeted support. The Department enriches learning via national and international conferences, workshops, guest lectures and heritage tours.
