The PG Department of Commerce is one of the oldest and largest academic units in the College. B.Com. was introduced in 1970, M.Com. in 2004, BBA in 2021, and the new B.Com. Tax Planning & Management programme in 2025.
The Department offers a comprehensive curriculum in accounting, finance, taxation, marketing, human resource management, business law and quantitative methods. Teaching emphasises both conceptual understanding and practical application, and faculty supervise dissertations, lead funded research, and mentor students for professional examinations such as CA, CS, CMA and the UGC NET.
Twenty-one permanent faculty members — three Professors, five Associate Professors and thirteen Assistant Professors — bring sustained scholarly and administrative experience to the Department. Several hold elected or nominated positions on Boards of Studies at Panjab University and other institutions.

Established 1970. Three-year B.Com. and four-year B.Com. (Honours) and B.Com. (Honours with Research) under the NEP curriculum, covering accounting, business management, taxation, law and quantitative techniques.
Newly introduced in 2025. Three-year and four-year (Honours / Honours with Research) NEP programme focused on direct and indirect taxation, tax planning, compliance and management.
Established 2021. Industry-oriented bachelor of business administration with the NEP-aligned three-year and four-year Honours and Honours with Research tracks.
Established 2004. Two-year postgraduate programme with electives in finance, accounting and management.

Prof. (Dr) Manjinder Singh — Best Research Paper of the Year Award (2024) for "Measuring Impact in Open Access Research: An Altmetric and Citation Analysis", conferred by the International Journal of Information Studies and Libraries (Publishing India Group).
Dr Anupama Vashisht received the State NSS Award in 2025 for her work as NSS Programme Officer (2021–2024), during which she conducted awareness drives, donation drives and an NSS Camp.
Dr Rimpi Kaur — Excellent Research Award (2011) and Best Teacher Award (2009) for outstanding contributions to research and quality teaching.
Faculty have led UGC- and ICSSR-funded research projects in commerce, finance and management. Prof. (Dr) Manjinder Singh has completed major research projects funded by UGC and ICSSR; Dr Harmeet Kaur completed an ICSSR-sponsored project; Dr Seema Chopra completed an ICSSR Minor Research Project.
The Business Quest Club builds a network among Commerce students through activities aimed at personality development, communication and decision-making skills, business awareness and the spirit of competition. Annual activities are organised at the departmental, College and inter-college levels, and student members regularly volunteer for departmental and College activities and win laurels in inter-college competitions.
Students have been placed with companies including Infosys, eClerx and Amazon through the Department’s placement coordination efforts.
